Traditional orangeries inspired by our heritage

Traditional orangeries are a part of our British heritage. Whilst the practice of growing vegetables under glass first used by the Romans, The history of the Orangery begins with records of Roman times, it was really not until the 18th century that botanists, bringing back tender exotic citrus plants from round the world that led to the first appearance of the orangery or conservatory as part of the great homes of the wealthy and aspirational in Britain.

A notable figure in that history was Queen Anne, who, in her time at Kensington Palace took on a number of garden building projects during her reign. A small number of these projects still remain, most notably the beautiful Kensington Palace Orangery. The main purpose of this orangery design was to act as greenhouse for the over-wintering of exotic citrus plants and trees that were outside in the gardens in summer. The other function of the Orangery was as  a ‘summer supper house’ and a was used as place for entertainment.

Traditional orangeries in the 21st Century

Orangery extensions remain superb rooms to grow exotic fruits in, as well as providing a great environment for all kinds of beautiful house plants. These days, domestic orangeries are built for many reasons which also include expanded living space, dining room areas, home offices, gyms, playrooms, libraries and so many more. Commercial orangeries are used for an even wider range of purposes, from tearooms and restaurant extensions to housing swimming pools and elegant dance floors.
